How to Improve Your Heart Health
Note: Please consult with your physician before implementing any changes to your diet or supplementation. The information below is not to be construed as medical advice.
1. Maintain a healthy sodium-potassium balance by limiting your processed salt intake and adding potassium-rich foods to your diet such as avocadoes, berries, bananas, and sweet potatoes. A healthy balance contributes to a healthier blood pressure and reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. Heavily processed table salt is stripped of its natural minerals, so try Himalayan Pink Salt which is abundant in several minerals including magnesium. Pink salt is also good for hair, skin, and nails.

2. Breathwork and Stress Reduction. Breathing affects the nervous system and cardiovascular system. It is not just about lung capacity. Breathing exercises include belly breathing, laughter therapy, and Pranayama, the Ancient practice of breathwork from Ayurveda. Deep intentional breathing draws the breath in deeper to boost oxygenation of the brain and tissues. Taking deep, slow breaths in and exhaling for a longer duration is the optimal method to help with lowering blood pressure and reducing anxiety. Dr.Dias is a trained and certified Ayurvedic professional who coaches her clients on proper breathing as part of her coaching and Ayurvedic services. She assists clients in Glendale, Phoenix, Arizona, ona and online.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight. The best strategy to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is to commit to a program, one that includes accountability such as a coach or guide. Seek a professional who is trained and certified to give dietary and lifestyle advice and one who is willing to work with your physician to ensure optimal benefits and reduced risk of food-drug reactions, supplement-drug reactions, or injury. Excess weight puts pressure not only on the cardiovascular system but also on your joints. In another article, we will explain other risks and concerns of being overweight. Our health coaching services include one-on-one virtual and phone sessions with Dr. Dias. She is a chiropractic physician with certifications in functional medicine and Ayurveda and has helped design customized plans and programs specific to clients’ constitution, environment, and physical, and neuro-emotional abilities and goals.

4. Chiropractic: Most people think chiropractic is only useful for back and neck pain. The truth is, that chiropractic is a powerful natural intervention for nervous system health, which directly affects the cardiovascular system and can help to improve your heart health. The chiropractic adjustment directly impacts the transmission of signals from the spinal cord through the designated pathway at the particular spinal joint level. For example, high blood pressure can be caused by a misaligned Atlas vertebra in the neck. This is the first vertebra that connects your head to your spine. Chronic inflammation in the body contributes to several conditions including arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. Several studies support the benefits of chiropractic in reducing inflammation in the body.

5. Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a standardized treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine where the insertion of fine needles directly into acupuncture points helps promote a healthy flow of Chi or “Qi”. In this PubMed article, they explain the positive impact of acupuncture on the neuro-humoral or “long-loop” pathway in improving heart health. At Living Pure, our acupuncture services are provided by Dr. Philip Zair, who has a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and has been helping clients in Phoenix, Surprise, Peoria, and Glendale for over 18 years.
